Playing Ace King

Big Slick is one of the most appealing yet dangerous hands in online poker. While there are few hands better in the ranking of poker hands, it’s not a complete hand unless you connect with the board. Indeed, for all its pre-flop power, ace king will still lose to a pair of deuces if it doesn’t improve post-flop.

The best way to play ace king is to be as aggressive as possible pre-flop. At every opportunity you should raise and re-raise and, if possible, move all of your stack into the middle. Doing this will not only force out any hands that are currently beating you but give you the betting lead.

Having the betting lead is important in poker because it allows you to take down the pot even if you don’t make a pair or better. Thus, by playing ace king in the most aggressive way you give yourself two opportunities to win: either you make the best hand or you push your opponents off the pot.

The biggest mistake players make when playing ace king is to try and make a hand post-flop. While you will make a pair some of the time, it becomes a very tricky hand to play if you don’t. Indeed, you’ll find yourself caught in 2 mindsets because on the one hand you know your hand is a strong pre-flop holding, but when you miss the board it becomes just ace high. Therefore, you need to know when to go with the hand and when to give up.

Ace king can be a great hand to play, indeed, if you had a choice of any poker hand it would certainly rank very highly. However, if you don’t play it in the right way it can turn into a nightmare holding. Be aggressive is the most important thing to remember when you look down at the hand commonly known as Big Slick.
