How to Become a Poker Maniac

Rate this Entry
When Phil Hellmuth was eliminated from the 2012 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event, this is what his exit tweet said:

“I’m out of the Main Event! Feeling tortured: Feeling sick…Maniac winning every pot w K-9 + Q-8 KNEW he would implode, BUT he busts me 1st.”

Playing the maniacal style of poker can infuriate players and put them on tilt. It is also a style that is used by a lot of professional players with great success.

The player that Hellmuth was referring to was European Poker Tour (EPT) Champion, Michael Tureniec, who is one hell of a player.
So, if you want to be a maniac, here are some tips!

1. The maniac will pick up many uncontested pots. If players keep letting you steal the blinds and antes, then keep on doing so.

2. Always be aware that you are treading on eggshells with your bluffing, and that you could lose a lot of chips in one fell swoop. It is important to get used to this fact, so to alleviate bouts of tilt consequently.

3. Keep your eye on stack sizes. Once you get deep, you do not want to be getting overly maniacal with a player sitting on another deep stack. Instead, focus your aggression on the small to medium stacks.

4. Get used to the variance. Your style of play means you are going to bounce out of a lot of tournaments in the early stages. This can be difficult to get used to, so learn to handle this eventuality with professionalism, in order to reduce the likelihood of tilt forming.
