Poker's popularity has definitely skyrocketed through the years. Everywhere you look you'll see poker enthusiasts either joining cash games or registering at local tournaments at a casino where one can enjoy an exciting night of poker. A poker night among friends organized each week would not be uncommon. Popular poker tournaments such as the WSOP contribute greatly to the growing popularity of the game. Poker fans worldwide were recently treated to another thrilling World Series Of Poker (WSOP) season, as the final tournament culminated earlier this month with two-time WSOP gold bracelet winner JC Tran emerging as the man holding the most number of chips with a 38,000,000 total heading into the Main Event Final Table. He'll be joined by David Benefield, Michiel Brummelhius, Jay Farber, Marc Etienne Mclaughlin, Sylvain Loosli, Mark Newhouse, Ryan Riess and Amir Lehavot to play for poker's greatest prize with over $8 million waiting for the winner come November 9.

JC Tran is undoubtedly the most experienced among the 9 Final Table participants, with nine wins and a total of 51 final tables to his name. He honed his skills playing in various poker tournaments and online casinos from Macau to California and on November he'll have a chance to raise his career total winnings to a cool $15 million, joining an elite group of poker pros that have accomplished the feat such as Phil Ivey, Erik Seidel, Sam Trickett, Daniel Negreanu, Phil Hellmuth and Antonio Esfandiari. Tran chances at winning the game's biggest prize got a big boost when Carlos Mortensen, looking to become a two-time champion after having won the event in 2001, eventually fell to 10th place and busted out of the famed November Nine. Another veteran with a good chance to win would be another WSOP bracelet winner Amir Lehavot, having previously won the 2011 WSOP $10,000 Pot Limit Hold 'Em event.

Among the new faces who will be making the Final Table will be amateur poker player Jay Farber. Jay, who works as a VIP host for some of Vegas' most popular bars and clubs, doesn't have an extensive poker resume but is good friends with some high stakes regulars including Ben Lamb, who was the WSOP 2011 Player of the Year. While questions about his game are normal for beginners, Farber believes that his experience with these people playing them in cash games will serve him in good stead. “I thankfully have a pretty good support network to help me out with everything, to prepare,” said Farber, who’s been playing poker for seven years. “I know them from (playing) cash games, and a lot of mutual friends and partying and stuff like that.”Based on opinions by poker pundits and online video poker reviews, Mark Newhouse might just pull off another stunning win at the Main Table. He had previously won the World Poker Tour Borgata Poker Open in 2006, and has showed flashes of brilliant strategy and the patience of a true champion to recover from a very short stack in Day 7 and eventually make it to the Main Event as part of the November 9. He has elevated his game from winning online jackpots to the big stage and although it remains to be seen if he can flash the same form that netted him a win at the WPT Borgata Poker Open, Mark will have his chance at the Main Event in October.

25 year old Canadian Marc McLaughlin, who is a tattoo artist by profession, has $673,755 in live tournament earnings with 6 career cashes and made the final table of once. Though relatively young at 25, Marc has been playing poker since he was a teen. He's also good friends with 2010 Main Event champ Jonathan Duhamel, whom he has known for almost 6 years. He holds the fourth best stack heading into the Main Event and if he wins it will be the 12th WSOP bracelet won by a Canadian in this year alone. For those of us who love to play video poker, qualifying for the Main Event of the WSOP would be a dream come true indeed. Marc looks to prove his critics wrong when he takes his seat among the Final 9 players in November.

Frenchman Sylvain Loosli, a cash game player by trade, plans to seek the advice and probably undergo some coaching from some of the top tournament players currently playing in WSOP Europe as his tuneup for November. “I plan to play a few live tournaments, because I haven’t played so many,” said Loosli, who anticipates being the center of attention during WSOP Europe events this October. “Maybe get some coaching from some of the top tournament players.”MSU alum Ryan Riess, will be cheered on by other players on the WSOP Circuit, having risen from the ranks and who recently finished as runnerup in the WSOP Circuit event in Hammond last October. He has the fifth best stack in the Main Event table while David Benefield, who is a veteran of the online poker scene as a member of the Ship It Holla Ballas, is the owner of the shortest stack among the nine. He is a feared and highly respected cash game and high stakes player who has also played some of the highest stakes cash games in the world in Macao.

Last but definitely not the least, Michiel Brummelhuis, the first Dutch player to book a seat at the final table, has something to motivate him when he competes for all the goodies on November. The Dutchman has a baby due on September, his first and looks to this as extra motivation to perform well at the Main Event. In one candid interview after finishing up on game reviews, he has this to say. “I can buy a nice baby room, I don’t know. Maybe (the Main Event) is life changing. I have to make some more money to make it life changing, but a baby is definitely life changing, and this is just a crazy amount of money,” said Brummelhuis. Fans of video poker and other online video games as well as rest of the poker world will surely be waiting with bated breath to see who emerges on top when the smoke clears after WSOP Main Event in November.
