Folding. This is the flathead screwdriver in your poker toolbox, the tool you'll use most often. At a full table, you'll probably be folding at least two out of every three hands before the flop, and a significant percentage of your hands once you see those first three cards.

The three or four players in the middle have an easier time of it than those in early position (EP). They get to see what the EPs do before the flop, and won't have to make any decisions after the flop until the blinds and EPs have acted. It's a luxury that allows you to play a relatively wider selection of hands. If no one has entered the pot before you, you can think about raising with some of the hands you might have thrown away from an early position and if an EP has already raised, you can safely fold some of your marginal holdings.

Check-raising has endured some criticism over the years - some players of the old believed that this particular type of duplicity constituted bad manners - but in today's game, the check-raise is an undeniably valuable tool, helping you to extract the most money possible with your winning hands. It also may be one of the most overused.

Cards that are of the same suit - a condition we call 'suited' - have a better chance of making flushes, while consecutive cards - called 'connectors' - are more likely to make straights. Hole cards that are both 'suited' and 'connectors' are even better, increasing your odds of making a straight, flush, or, on rare occasions, a straight flush.

Hands that incorporate both hole cards are generally stronger than our hands that only use one, as you're less likely to end up in a tie with an opponent, forcing you to split the pot.

You have to be very confident that someone is going to bet behind you in order to check-raise. If no one takes the bait, not only have you failed to make any money from this particular street, but you've given all of your opponents a dreaded free card, possibly allowing them to draw out on you. When in doubt, it's almost always better just to bet your strong hands.

Many of your opponents will perceive folding as a sign of weakness. They're wrong. At the poker table you're looking not only to maximise the amount that you win but also minimise what you lose. You can describe the winner of a poker tournament as the person that gains the most chips but you also can describe them as the player who has lost the least.

When on the button, you not only get to act last on every round of betting after the flop, but if no one has entered the pot before you then you can try to steal the blinds, raising with a hand that wouldn't ordinarily be worth two bets in the hopes of scaring the blinds into folding.
