Pros and Cons of Patient Play

Poker, it’s safe to say, is not for everybody. The special combination of skill, nerve and patience – in just the right quantities – is the major requirement of players.

Fortunately for the pros, most people err too heavily towards one quality over another. They have the guts but lack the brains. Or they’re skillful but too cautious. It’s rare for a person to possess all three characteristics in the right amounts. Only a small number of poker players maintain a winning percentage over time.

One of the smartest moves the amateur can make it to approach poker as entertainment. Set aside a certainly weekly pot which you consider leisure money well spent. Don’t just increase this when you win big – keep it consistent and you might actually find yourself better off in the long run. If you’re determinedly playing simply to win you’re likely to crash and burn. Poker is a very ‘streaky’ game, so you need to be aware of just how long your winning and losing streaks have been carrying on.

This realistic appraisal of your own game is where the patience comes in. Winners tend to me the most prepared players, so you need to have the tenacity to keep playing regularly, and to keep learning more about the game. Study the best in the business – there are plenty of videos online where you can watch the pros do it right.

Just as in real life, patience is one of the greatest virtues a person can have. Lack it, and you simply won’t be a winning player in the long term. Get inside your own head before trying to play mind games with others. In other words, take the time to bring your own mental habits – however subtle – under your compete control. You are the dictator. Your brain cells are your loyal subjects.

One of the major flaws among players is there determination to start playing with their first couple of hands. You get the itch and start taking risks on hands you know you should be folding. Never play a bad hand from the wrong position. Be patient. Naturally, you’ll get lucky on occasion, with that odd two pair on the flop with a 7-4 offsuit, but it’s important to remember all those times you completely missed. Having a memory for the bad times is important – this is where patience meets discipline.

If you’re in the pot with a 7-4 and you’re not on the big blind, it’s likely you’ve been impatient. But don’t despair – make up for your impulsiveness with extra discipline across the rest of the hand.

When you do find yourself in a rut, remember that you can control every aspect of your own game. You can make good decisions as little or as often as you like. Many of your opponents won’t have the discipline or patience that you have. They’ll draw out on you with hands they shouldn’t even be in the game with. Know when to hold ‘em. Know when to fold ‘em. It WORKS. Show a little patience and you might see a big improvement in your poker pot balance.
